We are deep in the Thin Paint Era. Back in my day, you could practically measure paint thickness with a yardstick; in 2023, the robots at the factory were programmed for "maximum efficiency." That means these finishes-while beautiful-are thin. If you're staring at the front cap of your Tiffin and seeing a galaxy of tiny white dots, those aren't stars-they're stone chips. The clear coat is applied with such robotic precision that there's zero "meat" on the bone. It looks like glass until a pebble hits it, and then it cracks like a cheap phone screen. You're also likely seeing those lovely black streaks from roof runoff because the clear coat doesn't have the depth to fight off the elements like the old high-solids stuff did.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up a 2023 rig, remember: Build layers slowly; don't blob it. Because the factory finish is so thin and uniform, a giant "glob" of touch-up paint will stick out like a sore thumb. You want to mimic that robot efficiency. Use a fine-tipped applicator and apply three or four paper-thin layers rather than one thick one.
