Welcome to the Thin Paint Era. By 2017, the robots in the factory had become so "efficient" that they were applying paint with the generosity of a landlord returning a security deposit. These SEATs left the line with a Basecoat/Clearcoat finish optimized for the scales, not for the real world. Because the coats are so thin, those aggressive, sharp body lines are absolute magnets for rock chips. Once a chip hits, you're on a ticking clock; if you let moisture get under that thin skin, the clear coat will start to delaminate and peel away from the red base like a bad sunburn.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up a 2017 SEAT, you have to fight your instinct to fill the chip in one go. Remember: the factory was stingy, so you have to be precise. Build your layers slowly. If you try to "blob" the paint to match the depth of the surrounding area in one hit, it'll look like a pimple on a supermodel. Use several thin passes, letting the paint tack up in between. This mimics that robotic "thin-coat" look and prevents the repair from standing out against the rest of the panel.
