How to Find Your 1997 Saturn's Color Code

Saturn used many different locations for the paint color plate over the years, making it hard to find. The paint code is usually in the glove box or the spare tire well; if not there, it may be elsewhere. GM did not standardize the location across makes and models. Codes like 51/WA316N are often preceded by BC/CC; two tone cars may show U or L (Upper/Lower), e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N. There can be eighteen different code 51's so 316N identifies the color.

1997 Saturn Background Info

The 1997 Saturn Vibe

1997 was the peak of the "Different Kind of Car Company" era. Whether you were rocking the fuel-sipping SL1, the more spirited SL2, or the "it's-basically-a-spaceship" Sport Coupe, you were driving a car made of Tupperware's more sophisticated cousin. Those polymer body panels were famous for shrugging off grocery store door dings, but they weren't immune to the sun. While the 90s loved its forest greens and teals, we've focused our attention on the real survivor of the bunch: Black. It's the one color that keeps a Saturn looking like a serious machine rather than a faded toy, provided you can keep the clear coat from deciding it wants to be a separate entity.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to The Peeling Era. In 1997, the industry was deep into the transition to high-solids clear coat systems, and frankly, they hadn't perfected the handshake between the color and the clear yet. On a Saturn, you've got a unique "War of the Worlds" happening: the plastic door panels and fenders won't rust, but the steel roof and trunk lid definitely will. Most of these cars now suffer from "Delamination"-where the clear coat begins to flake off in jagged white sheets, leaving the base color underneath looking dry and chalky. If your roof looks like it's suffering from a bad sunburn, the clear has failed, and the clock is ticking before that exposed base coat absorbs enough moisture to lift right off the panel.

Restoration Tip

When you're fixing chips or peeling spots on a '97, you have to play by the rules of the plastic. If you've got clear coat lifting, do not-I repeat, do not-just spray over the flake. You need to feather those edges back with 600-grit wet sandpaper until you can't feel the transition between the clear and the base. Since you're dealing with polymer panels, if you sand through to the actual "plastic," you must use an adhesion promoter before hitting it with primer or color. These panels "breathe" differently than steel; if you don't seal those chips immediately, the clear around the wound will start to lift, and you'll be chasing a peeling edge across the whole car for the rest of the summer.
