How to Find Your 2001 Saturn's Color Code

Saturn used many different locations for the paint color plate over the years, making it hard to find. The paint code is usually in the glove box or the spare tire well; if not there, it may be elsewhere. GM did not standardize the location across makes and models. Codes like 51/WA316N are often preceded by BC/CC; two tone cars may show U or L (Upper/Lower), e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N. There can be eighteen different code 51's so 316N identifies the color.

2001 Saturn Background Info

The 2001 Saturn Vibe

Ah, 2001. A "different kind of car company" was busy making a different kind of mess for us painters. You've probably got an SL2 or a Sport Coupe sitting in the driveway, or maybe one of those L-Series Wagons that tried so hard to look European. Back then, Saturn was the king of the "dent-resistant" polymer panel. While your neighbor was crying over door dings, you were laughing-at least until the sun hit that factory finish for a few years. In our database, we've focused on the survivors of this era, keeping the essentials like Black and Cream White ready for the sprayer. These were the "no-nonsense" shades for a car that promised to last forever, even if the clear coat had other plans.

Paint Health Check

We are deep in The Peeling Era here. By 2001, the factory was using a basecoat/clearcoat system that looked great in the showroom but didn't always play nice with those plastic body panels. The big threat isn't rust-obviously-it's delamination. Because the plastic expands and contracts at a different rate than the paint, the clear coat eventually decides it's had enough and starts lifting off in sheets. If you see a white, flaky haze around the edges of a stone chip on your LS1, that's the clear coat losing its grip. Once it starts "sunburning" like that, the color underneath is defenseless.

Restoration Tip

If you've got a chip on those polymer panels, you need to seal it immediately. In this era of paint, a tiny nick is an invitation for moisture to get under the clear and start a landslide. When you're repairing a spot, don't just dab it; you've got to lightly feather the edges of the failing clear with a fine abrasive so your new layer has a mechanical bond to the base. If the clear has already started to lift and "bubble," you can't just paint over it-you have to sand back until you hit stable territory. Treat every chip like a breach in a levee; plug it now, or you'll be repainting the whole door by next summer.
