If you're staring at your Saturn and it looks like it's suffering from a giant, flaky sunburn, don't panic-you've just entered The Peeling Era. By 2005, manufacturers were getting better at clear coats, but Saturn's unique polymer panels presented a challenge. Plastic expands and contracts at a different rate than the metal hood or roof. Over twenty years, that movement stresses the bond, leading to delamination. You'll see it first on the edges of the doors or the top of the VUE's liftgate. Once that clear coat lifts and air gets underneath, it starts flaking off in sheets, leaving your base color exposed and defenseless against the elements.

Restoration Tip

The secret to saving a 2005 Saturn is stopping the shelf. When the clear coat peels, it leaves a hard "edge" or shelf where the failure ends. If you just spray over it, that edge will show through like a scar. You need to feathered-edge that peeling clear coat with 800-grit sandpaper until the transition from the basecoat to the remaining clear feels smooth to the touch. Once you've leveled the playing field, hit it with your color match and a high-quality clear. And remember: those plastic panels are flexible, so don't go too heavy with the product-build your layers thin and steady so the paint can move with the car.
