How to Find Your Saturn LS1/LS2's Color Code

Saturn used many different locations for the paint color plate over the years, making it hard to find. The paint code is usually in the glove box or the spare tire well; if not there, it may be elsewhere. GM did not standardize the location across makes and models. Codes like 51/WA316N are often preceded by BC/CC; two tone cars may show U or L (Upper/Lower), e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N. There can be eighteen different code 51's so 316N identifies the color.

The Color Breakdown

Saturn only rolled out 8 colors for the LS1/LS2, but they certainly didn't play it safe. While we have the usual White and Silver Metallic, someone in the design department clearly had a sweet tooth-we ended up with Dark Plum Metallic and Blackberry Metallic. It's a sophisticated palette for a car that was built to be sensible, proving that even a commuter car can have a little "berry" flair.

What to Watch For

Before you start, you need to find your "Birth Certificate." In the Saturn world, your paint code is hiding in the trunk. Pull up the carpet and look at the spare tire cover for a white sticker. You're looking for a code that starts with "BC/CC" followed by a "U" (for Upper color) and a four-digit string like "WA549F."

Keep a close eye on your hood and roof. These Saturns were built with a mix of plastic and metal panels, and the clear coat on the metal bits tends to get "sunburned" and flake off over time. If you see a spot that looks like it's peeling, address it early before the weather gets to the metal underneath.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since most of these Saturn colors are heavy on the pearls and metallics (we see you, Medium Gold Metallic), your biggest challenge isn't the color-it's the sparkles. Those tiny metallic flakes love to settle at the bottom of the bottle. Shake your touch-up pen or brush for a full 60 seconds-yes, time it-to wake up those flakes. When applying, think "thin and patient." Use the tip of the brush to dab small dots of paint into the chip rather than painting a long stripe. Two thin coats will always look better than one giant, dark glob.
