How to Find Your Saturn SL's Color Code

Saturn used many different locations for the paint color plate over the years, making it hard to find. The paint code is usually in the glove box or the spare tire well; if not there, it may be elsewhere. GM did not standardize the location across makes and models. Codes like 51/WA316N are often preceded by BC/CC; two tone cars may show U or L (Upper/Lower), e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N. There can be eighteen different code 51's so 316N identifies the color.

The Color Breakdown

Saturn really went for it with the S-Series, recording 23 different shades for the SL. They range from the standard White and Silver Metallic to some truly inspired choices like Dark Antelope Metallic, Cranberry Metallic, and the mysterious Black Gold Metallic. If you're driving one of the "Pri" colors-like Black Silver Pri Metallic-you're working with a premium metallic finish that was designed to catch the light (and your neighbors' eyes) back in the 90s.

What to Watch For

Since your SL is essentially a "Tupperware" car with those famous dent-resistant plastic panels, the paint behaves a little differently than it does on a steel door. You'll mostly notice the clear coat starting to flake away on the roof or the tops of the doors, or perhaps some "fuzziness" on the bumpers. To find your exact match, head to the trunk. Lift the carpet and look at the spare tire cover. You should see a "Service Parts Identification" sticker; your paint code is usually at the bottom, often starting with a "U" or "WA."

Driveway Repair Tip

Because many Saturn colors are heavy on the metallic flakes, that little touch-up bottle is your best friend-but only if you shake it like you're mixing a drink for at least 60 seconds. This wakes up the silver and gold bits that have settled at the bottom. When you apply it to those plastic panels, remember that they like to flex. Instead of one big, thick drop of paint that might crack later, dab on two or three very thin layers. Patience is the secret ingredient here; let each layer dry for about 15 minutes before adding the next.
