Welcome to the Thin Paint Era. By 2015, the robots in the factory had become masters of efficiency, meaning they applied just enough paint to look pretty on the showroom floor, but not a micron more. If you own an FR-S, you've likely noticed the front bumper looks like it's been through a meteor shower-the paint is "soft" and catches rock chips if you even look at a gravel road. Worse yet, owners of Blizzard Pearl or Super White 2 discovered the hard way that sometimes the bond between the primer and the metal was more of a suggestion than a commitment, leading to the infamous "Toyota Peel" where the paint flakes off in sheets. If your roof or trunk is starting to look "chalky" or hazy, that's the early stage of clear coat failure-what we call "paint cancer."

Restoration Tip

Because the factory finish from 2015 is so thin, you have to be surgical with your repairs. Build layers slowly; don't blob it. If you're filling a chip, resist the urge to fill it in one heavy drop. Use a fine-tip applicator to build the color in thin, patient layers, allowing it to dry in between. This mimics the factory's thin-coat profile and prevents that "raised scab" look. Since the clear coat is likely already stressed by UV rays, always finish your repair with a high-quality sealant to give those remaining microns a fighting chance against the sun.
