How to Find Your 2011 Smart's Color Code

Smart color code locations: on the drivers door jamb, on the radiator support, or on the cowling under the hood. If the code is not found, Smart can be contacted to see if they can determine the color code. If there is no color code, alternatives include the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number.

2011 Smart Background Info

The 2011 Smart Vibe

Back in 2011, we all thought we'd be zipping through "Smart Cities" in motorized pods by now. The Fortwo was the poster child for that high-tech, urban future, and let me tell you, the color palette was surprisingly adventurous for a car that fits in a grocery cart. While the rest of the world was drowning in a sea of boring grays, Smart was out here moving units in Orange Metallic and that funky Light Green Metallic (matt). With 12 different shades in our database, it's clear they weren't shy about variety-even if most people just stuck with Crystal White or Deep Black to match their iPhones.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the Thin Paint Era. By 2011, the robots in the factory had become way too good at their jobs. They figured out exactly how many microns of paint they could get away with before the plastic panels started showing through, and they didn't give you a single drop extra. This was peak "Robot Efficiency." Because the Fortwo is essentially a collection of plastic body panels draped over a metal Tridion Silver Metallic safety cell, the paint has a hard life. It's thin, it's brittle, and it has to flex along with those thermoplastic panels. If you've got a Rally Red model, check your hood-that era was notorious for the clear coat deciding it wanted to be a convertible and peeling right off the plastic.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up a 2011, remember: you're working with a factory finish that's thinner than a cheap diner napkin. The biggest mistake you can make is trying to fill a chip in one heavy go. If you "blob" it, the paint won't level correctly against that thin factory skin, and you'll end up with a high spot that sticks out like a sore thumb. Build your layers slowly. Apply a paper-thin coat, let it flash, and repeat until you've built it up to the surface. It takes patience, but it's the only way to make a repair look like it was done by a human and not a malfunctioning robot.
