How to Find Your Smart Fortwo's Color Code

Smart color code locations: on the drivers door jamb, on the radiator support, or on the cowling under the hood. If the code is not found, Smart can be contacted to see if they can determine the color code. If there is no color code, alternatives include the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number.

The Color Breakdown

For a car that's barely longer than a park bench, Smart really went for it in the paint booth. We have 54 recorded colors for the Fortwo, ranging from the sophisticated River Silver Metallic to the "look-at-me" Electric Green Metallic and the punchy Jupiter Red. Whether your car is dressed in a "matt" Light Green or a Flame Yellow Tricoat, these colors were designed to make a big statement in a small package.

What to Watch For

Before you start, you'll need to find your paint code. On a Smart Fortwo, it's usually hiding on the passenger side B-pillar (open the door and look for the sticker near the latch) or tucked away in the trunk area behind the floor panel.

The "Agitate" factor here is the clear coat. Smart cars are famous for their plastic body panels, and on older models-especially the reds-the clear coat has a habit of getting "crunchy" and peeling off in sheets. If you see a bubble near the roof corners or door handles, don't ignore it! Because these panels are plastic, the sun can be extra harsh on the pigment underneath once that protective clear layer goes on vacation.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since most of your Smart car is made of high-tech plastic, it handles paint a little differently than a heavy steel truck. When using your touch-up pen or brush, patience is your secret weapon.

Many of these colors, like the Indian Yellow Tricoat or the Pearl finishes, have specialized flakes that like to settle at the bottom of the bottle. Give your paint a vigorous shake for a full 60 seconds-longer than you think you need-to wake up those sparkles. Apply your paint in very thin, whisper-light layers. If you're working on a spot where the clear coat has peeled, be sure to finish with a dedicated clear topcoat. This seals the "wound" and keeps that vibrant color from fading into a dull pink or hazy grey.
