How to Find Your 1986 Toyota's Color Code

On all Toyota models, the color ID plate is on the drivers door jamb. It shows the letters C/TR and then the paint code. Example: C/TR 3P1 FA09. The color code is 3P1; FA09 is not part of the color code and is an interior option code. For example, 3P1 is Impulse Red Metallic Clearcoat; names may vary like Red Metallic Clearcoat or Wine Metallic Clearcoat. The color code can also be obtained from a dealer using the VIN.

1986 Toyota Background Info

The 1986 Toyota Vibe

Welcome to 1986-the year of Top Gun, synth-pop, and Toyota's absolute refusal to build a boring car. Whether you were redlining an MR2 through a canyon, hauling the family in a Cressida, or getting mud on a 4Runner, the look was unmistakable: bold, clean, and unpretentious. Our database for this year focuses on the survivors-the five iconic shades that defined the era. You had Super Red and Super White 2 ruling the sports cars, while Gray Metallic and Beige kept the trucks and sedans looking sophisticated. It was a time when a Toyota didn't just run forever; it looked sharp doing it.

Paint Health Check

In '86, we were living in the "Peeling Era" transition. Toyota was still using legendary single-stage paints for solids like Super Red, which don't peel but sure do "chalk" (if your red looks like a dusty pink marshmallow, that's oxidation). However, the metallics-like that Gray Metallic-were early adopters of the basecoat/clearcoat system. The problem? That 1980s clear coat tech wasn't ready for forty years of UV rays. If you see white, flaky patches that look like the car is sunburned and peeling, you've got delamination. Once the clear coat loses its bond to the color underneath, it's a race against time before the elements turn your sleek Celica or Supra into a rust bucket.

Restoration Tip

If you're lucky enough to have original paint, your biggest enemy is "Clear Coat Cancer." For those early clear-coated metallics, you have to seal stone chips immediately. In this era, moisture loves to crawl under the edge of a chip and lift the clear coat right off the base. Don't wait until the weekend; dab a bit of touch-up paint into the chip the second you see it. For the single-stage solids like Super White 2, a good high-carnuaba wax is your best friend-it acts as a sacrificial layer so the sun eats the wax instead of your pigment.
