How to Find Your 1990 Toyota's Color Code

On all Toyota models, the color ID plate is on the drivers door jamb. It shows the letters C/TR and then the paint code. Example: C/TR 3P1 FA09. The color code is 3P1; FA09 is not part of the color code and is an interior option code. For example, 3P1 is Impulse Red Metallic Clearcoat; names may vary like Red Metallic Clearcoat or Wine Metallic Clearcoat. The color code can also be obtained from a dealer using the VIN.

1990 Toyota Background Info

The 1990 Toyota Vibe

In 1990, Toyota was at the peak of its "over-engineered" era. Whether you were carving canyons in a Supra, hauling a surfboard in a Vanwagon, or putting 300,000 miles on a 4Runner, you were driving a tank with a radio. The color palette from this year was the bridge between the dusty browns of the '80s and the vibrant metallics of the '90s. We've focused our database on the essential survivors-the "Big Six"-including the legendary Super Red and Super White 2. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the most reliable machines on the planet.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to The Peeling Era. In 1990, Toyota was experimenting with early basecoat/clearcoat systems on their metallics, like Medium Blue Pearl Metallic, while keeping the solids like Super Red as single-stage. The result? A mixed bag of aging gracefully and total "delamination." If you've got a metallic finish, you're likely fighting clear coat failure where the top layer decides to check out, leaving the base color exposed and vulnerable. If you've got a solid color, you're dealing with the "Chalky Fade"-that classic oxidation that turns a vibrant red into a sad, sun-bleached pink.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1990 Toyota paint: Seal the border. Because this era is prone to delamination, a tiny rock chip is actually the beginning of a "clear coat cancer." Once air and moisture get under that clear layer, it starts to lift away from the base color like a bad sunburn. When you're touching up your 1990 survivor, make sure to clean the edges of the chip thoroughly and seal it immediately. If you're working with the single-stage Super White 2 or Super Red, don't be afraid to give the surrounding area a light polish first-you'll be amazed at the "new" paint hiding under that chalky top layer before you apply your fresh match.
