How to Find Your 1991 Toyota's Color Code

On all Toyota models, the color ID plate is on the drivers door jamb. It shows the letters C/TR and then the paint code. Example: C/TR 3P1 FA09. The color code is 3P1; FA09 is not part of the color code and is an interior option code. For example, 3P1 is Impulse Red Metallic Clearcoat; names may vary like Red Metallic Clearcoat or Wine Metallic Clearcoat. The color code can also be obtained from a dealer using the VIN.

1991 Toyota Background Info

The 1991 Toyota Vibe

Welcome to 1991-the year Toyota decided to build vehicles that would simply refuse to die. Whether you were carving corners in a mid-engine MR2, hauling the family in a futuristic Previa "Egg," or bouncing a 4Runner off a rock in the middle of nowhere, you knew the mechanicals were bulletproof. Our database for this year focuses on the heavy hitters-the five shades that defined the era, from the ubiquitous Super White 2 to the deep Medium Blue Pearl Metallic. These weren't just colors; they were the uniforms of the most reliable fleet on the planet.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in The Peeling Era. While the 22RE engine in your Truck might go for half a million miles, the paint technology of the early '90s was a bit more temperamental. This was a transitional time where Toyota was perfected their basecoat/clearcoat systems, and 1991 models are prime candidates for "Delamination." If you see white, crusty edges around your paint chips or sections on the roof and hood where the shiny top layer is flaking off like a bad sunburn, that's clear coat failure. Once that UV protection lifts, the color underneath is a sitting duck.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1991 Toyota paint is this: Seal chips immediately before the clear lifts. If you let a stone chip sit, moisture will tunnel under the surrounding clear coat, causing it to lose its grip and start peeling in sheets. When you're touching up a spot, use a fine-grit sandpaper to gently "feather" or smooth out the edges of any failing clear coat before applying your color. This stops the "edge-lift" effect and ensures your repair actually sticks to the primer rather than just sitting on top of a dying clear coat.
