How to Find Your 1992 Toyota's Color Code

On all Toyota models, the color ID plate is on the drivers door jamb. It shows the letters C/TR and then the paint code. Example: C/TR 3P1 FA09. The color code is 3P1; FA09 is not part of the color code and is an interior option code. For example, 3P1 is Impulse Red Metallic Clearcoat; names may vary like Red Metallic Clearcoat or Wine Metallic Clearcoat. The color code can also be obtained from a dealer using the VIN.

1992 Toyota Background Info

The 1992 Toyota Vibe

In 1992, Toyota was busy building the most over-engineered machines on the planet. Whether you were carving corners in an MR2, hauling gear in a 4Runner, or just refusing to let your Cressida die, you knew you had a vehicle that would likely outlive your mortgage. When it comes to the palette, we've focused on the six essential survivors of the era-the colors that define the early '90s. From the classic punch of Super Red to the deep, sophisticated luster of Dark Blue Pearl Metallic, these were the shades that made a Camry look like it belonged in the executive parking lot and a Landcruiser look ready to cross a continent.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in The Peeling Era. While your 22RE engine is bulletproof, the paint technology of 1992 was still figuring out how to play nice with the sun. If your Toyota spent its life outside, you're likely staring at the dreaded "delamination"-that's when the clear coat decides to part ways with the base color, leaving your roof and hood looking like a sunburned tourist. On those classic Super White 2 and Super Red finishes, you might still have a single-stage setup that's just gone "chalky" from oxidation, but for the pearls and metallics, once that clear layer lifts, the clock starts ticking.

Restoration Tip

The secret to saving a '92 finish is sealing the perimeter. If you see a small chip or a tiny area where the clear coat is starting to bubble and lift, you need to act immediately before the wind and rain turn that dime-sized spot into a dinner plate. Sand back any loose edges of the clear coat very gently with fine-grit paper until you hit "stable" paint, then apply your touch-up color and a fresh clear layer to lock it down. Think of it like a surgical graft; you're sealing the edges to stop the delamination from traveling across the rest of the panel.
