How to Find Your 1998 Toyota's Color Code

On all Toyota models, the color ID plate is on the drivers door jamb. It shows the letters C/TR and then the paint code. Example: C/TR 3P1 FA09. The color code is 3P1; FA09 is not part of the color code and is an interior option code. For example, 3P1 is Impulse Red Metallic Clearcoat; names may vary like Red Metallic Clearcoat or Wine Metallic Clearcoat. The color code can also be obtained from a dealer using the VIN.

The 1998 Toyota Vibe

1998 was the year Toyota decided to build things that simply refused to die. While the Supra was cementing its status as a digital-age legend and the 4Runner was proving itself as an immortal mountain goat, the color palette was caught in a transition. We've got the 90s holdovers like Mystic Teal Pearl (which we call Turquoise) and the classic Radiant Red. If you're looking at our database and seeing three different versions of "White," don't blink-that's just Toyota being Toyota. We've focused on the survivors, the shades that actually made it through the Clinton era without looking like a chalkboard.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the heart of The Peeling Era. By 1998, the industry had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but they hadn't quite mastered the "staying together" part. On a '98 Camry or Tacoma, the mechanicals are bulletproof, but the clear coat is likely planning a divorce from the base color. This is called delamination. If you see white, flaky edges around your stone chips or your roof looks like it's mid-sunburn, your clear coat is failing. Once the air gets under that clear layer, it's a slow crawl toward a full-blown peel.

Restoration Tip

In this era, a "quick touch-up" can turn into a disaster if you aren't careful. If you have a chip, you need to seal it immediately. If the clear coat has already started to lift at the edges of the chip, use a fine-grit sandpaper (around 1500) to very gently feather those edges down until they're flush with the paint before applying your match. If you just blob paint over a lifting edge, the "delamination" will just keep tunneling underneath your repair. Seal the edges, lock it down, and you might just get another twenty years out of that Land Cruiser.
