How to Find Your Toyota Prius's Color Code

On all Toyota models, the color ID plate is on the drivers door jamb. It shows the letters C/TR and then the paint code. Example: C/TR 3P1 FA09. The color code is 3P1; FA09 is not part of the color code and is an interior option code. For example, 3P1 is Impulse Red Metallic Clearcoat; names may vary like Red Metallic Clearcoat or Wine Metallic Clearcoat. The color code can also be obtained from a dealer using the VIN.

The Color Breakdown

Toyota has treated the Prius to a surprisingly wild wardrobe over the years. While most of us see a sea of Silver Metallic and Classic Silver at the stoplight, there are actually 67 recorded colors in the Prius archives. Toyota really "went for it" with some of these choices-we're talking Electric Lime Effect, Pistachio Effect, and a color simply called Mustard. Whether you're driving a sensible Sea Glass Pearl or a bold Barcelona Red, your car was designed to stand out, even if it was just to help you find it in the grocery store parking lot.

What to Watch For

Prius paint is a bit like the car itself: efficient and high-tech, but it benefits from a gentle touch. Owners often report that the clear coat can be "soft," making the hood a magnet for road chips. If you have a Gen 2 or Gen 3 Prius, keep a close eye on the rear spoiler and the hatch area above the license plate-these plastic bits are notorious for clear coat peeling if they've spent too much time in the sun. To get started on your fix, open your driver's door and look at the sticker on the jamb. You're looking for a three-digit code next to the "C/TR" (Color/Trim) label-something like 070 for Blizzard Pearl or 1G3 for Magnetic Gray.

Driveway Repair Tip

Many of the best Prius colors, like Wind Chill Pearl or Hypersonic Red, are "Tricoats," meaning they have a sparkly middle layer. These colors require a bit of patience to get right. Before you start, shake your touch-up bottle for a full 60 seconds-longer than you think you need-to wake up those metallic flakes. When applying the paint, think "thin and light." Use the tip of the applicator to dab the paint into the chip rather than brushing it on like a wall. If you're working on a deep chip, it's better to do two thin layers thirty minutes apart than one giant, goopy blob that will never level out.
