How to Find Your Volkswagen CC's Color Code

Volkswagen paint codes can be difficult to find. Most are located around the spare tire area, printed on a paper color id tag that is guaranteed to fall off and disappear just when needed; not on a metal plate in the driver door jamb. Typical format: LD7X/2R (two codes: LD7X and 2R). LD7X corresponds to Platinum Gray Metallic Clearcoat; 2R is also used for the same color. Really old Volkswagen can be nearly impossible to figure out.

The Color Breakdown

Volkswagen really went for it with the CC, recording a solid 23 colors over its lifespan. While they certainly leaned into the "50 shades of grey" aesthetic with options like Indium Gray Metallic and Urano Gray, they also threw in some absolute showstoppers. If you're rocking the Mocha Brown Pearl Metallic or the Harvard Blue Effect, you aren't just driving a sedan-you're driving a statement. Whether you have the crisp Candy White or the deep Deep Black Pearl, these finishes were designed to look expensive, which is why seeing a chip in that paint feels like a personal insult.

What to Watch For

Because the CC has that gorgeous, low-slung "coupe" profile, its long hood is essentially a giant catcher's mitt for road gravel. Rock chips on the front nose are the most common battle scars. You should also take a peek around the door handles and the bottom edges of the doors; these spots are known for small bubbles or "thinning" where the seals meet the metal.

To find your specific color code, don't bother looking in the door jamb like most cars. Head to the trunk, lift up the carpet, and look near the spare tire well. You're looking for a white paper sticker with a four-digit code (it usually starts with an 'L', like LC9X or LA7W). If it's not there, check the inside cover of your Service History book in the glovebox-VW usually hides a duplicate sticker there.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since most CC colors are Metallics or Pearls (looking at you, Island Gray and Fortana Red), the secret is in the "Shaker." These paints are filled with tiny flakes that like to settle at the bottom of the bottle. Shake your touch-up pen or bottle for a full 60 seconds-longer than you think you need-to wake up those sparkles. When applying, use the "less is more" approach. Dab a tiny amount into the center of the chip and let it flow to the edges. If you're working with a Pearl finish, it might look a little different at first, but requires patience to dry and settle. Two thin layers will always look better than one thick blob that stands out like a sore thumb.
