How to Find Your Volkswagen Scirocco's Color Code

Volkswagen paint codes can be difficult to find. Most are located around the spare tire area, printed on a paper color id tag that is guaranteed to fall off and disappear just when needed; not on a metal plate in the driver door jamb. Typical format: LD7X/2R (two codes: LD7X and 2R). LD7X corresponds to Platinum Gray Metallic Clearcoat; 2R is also used for the same color. Really old Volkswagen can be nearly impossible to figure out.

The Color Breakdown

Volkswagen really let their hair down with the Scirocco, recording a massive 63 colors over its lifetime. They gave us everything from the bold, 1970s-vibe Carolina Green to the sophisticated Brazil Bronze Metallic and the iconic Tornado Red. Whether yours is a vintage Mk1 or a sleek modern classic, VW clearly decided that "boring" wasn't in the design brief.

What to Watch For

If you're driving one of the classic red models, you've likely noticed your Tornado Red or Mars Red slowly turning into a polite shade of pink-those pigments love to soak up the sun and fade. On the newer models, the paint can be a bit "brittle," making the hood and front bumper a magnet for stone chips. To find your specific shade, head to the trunk (or the "boot," as the Scirocco was born to call it). Lift the carpet and look for a white paper sticker near the spare tire well. If it's not there, check the inside cover of your original service manual. You're looking for a code that usually starts with an "L" (like LY3D for Tornado Red).

Driveway Repair Tip

Since Sciroccos are prone to small, deep stone chips on that sloping nose, skip the giant brush that comes in the cap. Instead, grab a wooden toothpick. Dab a tiny amount of paint onto the tip and "drop" the color into the center of the chip. If you're working with one of those 63 metallic shades-like Diamond Silver or Cosmos Metallic-patience is your best friend. Shake that touch-up bottle for a full 60 seconds to wake up the metallic flakes. Apply two or three paper-thin layers rather than one big blob; this helps the "sparkles" lay down evenly so they don't look like a dark smudge in the sun.
