How to Find Your Volvo GLT's Color Code

Volvo paint codes can be anywhere in the engine compartment. They are typically on the radiator support, but may also be on the sheet metal on either side of the engine compartment, so finding them can be challenging. Typical color code format: 421. 421 corresponds to Dark Olive Pearl Clearcoat. Same color code, different name across models; for example, 421 could also be called Dark Green Clearcoat or Mystic Green Clearcoat.

The Color Breakdown

Volvo decided that seven was the lucky number for the GLT, giving us a palette that ranges from the stoic Black and Cascade White to the more adventurous-and very 90s-Cornado Gold Metallic. They really went for it with names like Redwood Metallic and Dusty Green Metallic, proving that even the most sensible Swedish brick can have a little personality when it wants to.

What to Watch For

While these cars are built like tanks, their clear coat isn't always as bulletproof. If your GLT has spent a few decades in the sun, you might notice what I like to call "Swedish Sunburn"-that's when the clear coat starts to lift or flake on the hood, roof, or trunk. Don't panic; just make sure you're cleaning away any loose flakes before you start your touch-up.

To find your exact shade, pop the hood. You aren't looking for a sticker on the door; check the driver's side strut tower (the big metal mound above the wheel) or the radiator support bar at the very front. You're looking for a three-digit number (like 189 or 426). It's usually tucked into a stamped metal ID plate, often in the third box down on the right-hand column.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since five of the seven GLT colors are metallics like Avalon Blue or Mystic Silver, your biggest challenge isn't the color-it's the sparkles. Metallic flakes are heavy and like to nap at the bottom of the bottle. Shake your touch-up pen or brush for a full two minutes (play a song, get a workout in) to wake them up. When applying, think "thin and patient." Two or three tiny, light layers will look like a professional fix, whereas one big glob will just look like a lonely mountain on your hood.
