How to Find Your Volvo Truck's Color Code

Volvo paint codes can be anywhere in the engine compartment. They are typically on the radiator support, but may also be on the sheet metal on either side of the engine compartment, so finding them can be challenging. Typical color code format: 421. 421 corresponds to Dark Olive Pearl Clearcoat. Same color code, different name across models; for example, 421 could also be called Dark Green Clearcoat or Mystic Green Clearcoat.

The Color Breakdown

Volvo Trucks didn't just stick to the standard fleet whites and greys; they really went for it with a palette of 35 recorded colors. We're talking about everything from the rugged Peanut Brown and Mushroom Beige to the surprisingly bold Cyber Green and Wheeling Green. Whether you're driving an Indigo Black VNL or a Primerose Yellow day cab, your truck has a personality that most highway haulers lack.

What to Watch For

Volvo paint is famously sturdy, but it can be a bit brittle. Because these trucks spend their lives eating highway miles, the most common "battle scars" are deep rock chips on the hood and the leading edges of the fenders-think of them as tiny craters in a "Rock Chip Warzone." You might also notice some slight peeling or wear where plastic trim pieces vibrate against the metal panels.

To find your fix, look for the silver manufacturer's tag. It's usually tucked inside the driver's side door jamb or under the hood on the firewall or core support. Look for a 3 or 4-digit number (like 1103) or a code starting with "P" (like P0280) hidden near the VIN.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since Volvo offers a lot of high-character finishes like Flame Red Pearl and Cayman Metallic, your bottle of touch-up paint is full of tiny "sparkles" that like to settle at the bottom. Before you open it, shake that bottle for a full 60 seconds-yes, time yourself-to wake up the metallic flakes so they match your truck's shimmer.

When filling those deep rock chips, don't try to fill the whole "crater" in one go. Use your brush to dab a tiny drop into the center of the chip and let it spread itself out. If the chip is deep, it requires patience: let the first layer dry for 20 minutes before adding a second. It's better to build a little mountain of paint than to have a messy "lake" that runs down your fender.
