How to Find Your Volvo Turbo's Color Code

Volvo paint codes can be anywhere in the engine compartment. They are typically on the radiator support, but may also be on the sheet metal on either side of the engine compartment, so finding them can be challenging. Typical color code format: 421. 421 corresponds to Dark Olive Pearl Clearcoat. Same color code, different name across models; for example, 421 could also be called Dark Green Clearcoat or Mystic Green Clearcoat.

The Color Breakdown

Volvo didn't just give us a car; they gave us a Swedish tank with a sense of style. With only 6 recorded colors, the Turbo keeps it focused. You've got the heavy hitters like White and Black, but they really leaned into the "Earth and Fire" vibe with Redwood Metallic and Tomato Red. Whether yours is dressed in the sophisticated Mystic Silver Metallic or the moody Blue Metallic, these colors were designed to look just as good under a layer of road salt as they do in a showroom.

What to Watch For

Before you crack open that paint pen, you need to find your "Social Security Number" (the paint code). On most Volvo Turbos, you'll find it on a small metal plate stamped onto the right-side strut tower under the hood or along the driver's side door jamb. Look for a three-digit number (like 189 or 614); ignore the extra dashes and numbers after it-those are just Swedish factory secrets. As for the paint itself, keep a close eye on the hood and roof. These cars are sturdy, but the clear coat on the flat surfaces tends to get tired from the sun. If you're touching up Tomato Red, be aware that the original paint on your car might have "sunburned" into a lighter pinkish-orange over the years, so your fresh touch-up will require a little patience to settle in.

Driveway Repair Tip

If you're working with Redwood, Blue, or Mystic Silver Metallic, you have a bottle full of tiny metal "sparkles" that love to nap at the bottom. Shake that bottle for a full two minutes-long after your arm starts to ache-to make sure the metallic flakes are actually on the brush. When you apply the paint, think "less is more." Use the tip of the brush to dab a tiny dot into the center of the chip and let it flow out to the edges on its own. It's much easier to add a second thin layer later than it is to deal with a big, globby "paint mountain" on your hood.
