How to Find Your Plymouth's Color Code

Plymouth paint codes were often hidden on top of the radiator support, hard to spot under engine grease and oil. Later models started putting them on the drivers door jamb. Typical code format appears as BS/GBS, but only the BS is the color code; variants like QBS, PBS, TBS may appear. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat. The G in GBS is not part of the code, and newer listings may simply show BS.

About Plymouth Paint

Plymouth has a long history of making cool cars with even cooler colors. With 19 models and 960 colors in our database, there is a lot to choose from. Older classic Plymouths from the 1960s and 70s often have very tough, single-stage paint that was built to last, while 90s models like the Neon or Prowler use a modern clearcoat that is quite hard. These paints are strong and keep their shine well, but they need a little extra patience when you are fixing a scratch.

Application Tips

When you spray or brush on Plymouth paint, it usually flows out smoothly and covers well. However, those famous "High Impact" colors like Lemon Twist or In-Violet are very bright and can sometimes be a bit see-through. To get the best look, you might need to apply an extra coat or two. Always make sure the surface is super clean, especially on older cars where engine grease likes to hide on the metal parts. It dries pretty fast, so work in a shaded area to keep the finish looking even.

Quick Summary

  • Paint Feel: Hard paint. This means it is very durable, but it takes a little longer to sand down if you are trying to smooth out a repair.
  • Best Advice: Always find your exact paint code first! On old cars, look on the radiator support, but on newer ones, check the driver's side door jamb. These codes can be tricky, so make sure you match the numbers exactly.
  • Pro Tip: If you are painting one of those bright 70s colors like Vitamin C orange, use a gray primer underneath. It helps the color "pop" much better and saves you from having to spray too many coats.
